Demi Moore pregnant - Vanity FairDemi Moore is the one who started it all. She was the first celebrity to appear nude and pregnant on a magazine cover. The landmark 1991 August Vanity Fair cover shot by Annie Liebovitz features a gorgeous and serenely naked Moore with one arm cradling her swollen belly and the other curved over her breasts. Seven months pregnant, she proudly shows off motherhood.

The Moore cover created quite a stir. While some viewed it as a symbol of empowerment, others found it grotesque and obscene - even though it displayed no more skin than photographs of models in magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Vogue. Sanctimonious newsstands refused to carry the issue, or modestly sold it in brown paper bags, as if it were a porn rag.

Before 1991, celebrities with bumps didn't dare step in front of photographers. Moore changed all of that. She led the way for other stars to show off their swollen bumps, and Cindy Crawford, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera were among those who followed in her footsteps. Some would even go as far to say that Moore made it acceptable for all pregnant women to flaunt their bellies. She changed the image of the dowdy, ashamed, uncomfortable pregnant woman into a symbol of pride and beauty.

"It's gratifying to think that the picture helped make pregnant women feel less awkward or embarrassed about their bodies," Liebovitz said of the cover.
